Is going solar a smart investment?

Grid-tie solar systems pay for themselves by reducing your monthly electric bill. Grid-tie systems have a 5-10 year payback period. Considering panels have a 25-year warranty, there’s plenty of time left over to profit off your investment into your panels.


Off-grid systems cost more because they require batteries, but they may still be a good investment compared to other methods of powering the property (like running a power line or using a gas generator).

What are federal solar tax credits?
The U.S. federal solar tax code (IRC § 25). The Residential Federal Solar Tax Credit is a credit for going solar that gives solar energy system owners a dollar-for-dollar reduction against their federal income taxes. It’s offered as an incentive to go solar because going solar is not just good for you, it’s beneficial for everyone.
The specific tax credit percentage changes depending on when the system is installed. 2021 and 2022 homeowners could receive a 22 percent tax credit as long as their solar energy system was installed and operational by December 31, 2022.


What is the cost of going solar?
Now, the outright cost of a typical home installation ranges from $16,200 to $21,400. The cost of going solar has dropped in the past several years. A decade ago, an average 7 kilowatt hour residential solar system was costing more than $50,000.
What financing options are available?
If you cannot buy your system outright, there are a few options to go solar with lower up-front cost:

Personal loan: A lender fronts the money for your system. You own the system and can claim any available incentives. You pay a monthly loan payment with interest to your lender.

Solar lease: A solar installer builds a system on your home. They own the system, so they claim any available incentives. You pay a monthly payment to the installer for the right to use all the power that the system generates.

Solar PPA (power purchasing agreement): Similar to a solar lease, except you pay for the power you use each month (at a rate lower than utility power). The installer still owns the system and claims the incentives.

How solar panels system work?
A solar system is made up of connected solar panels that absorb rays from the sun and convert it to electricity. The panels are made in such a way that when the sun rays come into contact with the surface of the panels, the solar cells convert them into DC (Direct Current) electricity. Since this form of electricity is not usable in most homes or businesses, an inverter transforms this direct current, into alternating current (AC).
How durable are the solar panels?
Solar panels have a long lifespan. The average life expectancy of most solar panels falls between 25 and 30 years. This is a long period that is great to cover the initial set up price. It mostly comes with 25 years warranty.
Is a backup battery storage necessary ?
It's not necessary. The solar panels system will be connected to the utility grid to ensure you have a continuous supply of power. By joining the grid, you will be selling the extra energy you produce during day time, and when the sun goes down, you can use the grid power. You even could pick up a plan for free electricity nighttime.
